Dangers Of Energy Drinks

You seem them advertised all over the place. Energy drinks can be found everywhere from health food stores to your common supermarket. The claims associated with these drinks range from the sublime to the preposterous. Yet, millions of Americans are buying these high powered pick-me-ups on a regular basis without giving even a single thought to how good or bad these drinks really are.

Drill Power Tools

The truth is, not all energy drinks are the same. While many of the ingredients are common among them, each drink has its own little twist to it. And reading the labels of these drinks isn't going to help the average consumer much if they don't know what to look for.

Drill Power Tools

The problem with many of these energy drinks is not what you know is in them but what you don't know or aren't familiar with. While one of the most common ingredients in these drinks is caffeine, this is only the tip of the iceberg as far as problems go. And yes, caffeine, especially in large quantities, is dangerous as it raises your blood pressure to begin with, not to mention other problems associated with the use of caffeine.

But what about the other common ingredients in energy drinks, the ones you probably never heard of? We are just beginning to learn of the problems associated with some of these ingredients, especially when mixed with other things, such as drugs.

To give you an example of what I am talking about, guarana, which is a very popular ingredient in many energy drinks, is a central nervous system stimulant. What you don't know is that consuming these drinks and then mixing them with drinks containing ephedrine or diet pills can be very dangerous.

Another popular ingredient in these drinks is taurine, which is actually something that we naturally get from foods that contain vitamin B6. We normally get more than enough taurine in out diet and the extra amount that we get from these drinks, depending on how much we consume, can become toxic in our systems.

But even worse than what we know about the ingredients in these energy drinks that can be harmful, especially if mixed with other items, is what we don't know. The FDA has all but admitted that many of the ingredients in most popular energy drinks have not been fully tested as to their degree of "safeness." This is not to say that these ingredients are good or bad, simply that we don't know. When you combine these factors with what we do know, that caffeine and some ingredients in these drinks can be harmful, it is almost like playing Russian Roulette with a fully loaded revolver to your head, especially if you're like most people who consume energy drinks. It is common knowledge that most energy drink consumers are not casual users and consume large quantities of these drinks. This fact just makes the consumption of these drinks that much more dangerous.

For what it's worth, there have been deaths reported, though not many, because of caffeine overdose from these drinks. At the very least, this should at least get energy drink consumers to drink in moderation until the FDA has had time to fully study the effects of these drinks and the ingredients in them.

To YOUR Health,

Steve Wagner

Volleyball Drills Three Drills To Enhance Your Volleyball Skills When Practicing By Yourself

I may sound a little bit crazy, but I absolutely love practicing my volleyball skills and developing new ones.

Drill Power Tools

Nothing makes me happier than being with my teammates, on the court, and practicing my jumps, blocking, serving, spiking, passing, bumping, and even conditioning.

Drill Power Tools

This is where I get pumped up and jazzed about playing. It's at these practice times where my team bonds together and we push each other beyond our limits. It's also where we can see where your own skills may be lacking on one area or another.

I used to think about these areas and think that there are other people on my team who excel in my weaknesses, so why should I have to practice and bust my butt to improve.

To Win. Win. Win.

Very simply the idea of transforming my team into a an unstoppable juggernaut where there are no weaknesses in any area of the court.

So how do I enhance my game, build upon my weaknesses and elevate my team? I practice by myself!

No It's Not An Oxymoron

How do I practice by myself? It's really a lot easier than you may think. I've created three great drills that I've used to help me in my weaker areas.

Timed Marksmanship

This is how I get the blood pumping. It's great for conditioning and for placing my serves right where I want them.

On one side of the court make 5-6 "x"'s on the floor with duct tape at various places. These are your targets. Then set a clock for 5 minutes and set up to serve on the other side.

You then practice serving and aiming for an "x". If you hit it grab another ball and go for another. But, if you miss you must run over, retrieve the ball, and try again until you hit it the "x".

The goal is to hit all the "x"'s on the other side within the time limit. It's a gut buster and really helps with your concentration, conditioning, and serves. Both in power and accuracy.

Set Me Up Again and Again

This is where you actually set up spikes to yourself. Another great conditioning drill but also gives great accuracy in your sets.

Again, put several "x"'s on the floor in random places. Then simply throw a ball up in the air where you're standing and simply "set" the ball towards another "x". Quickly run to it and "set" it again towards another "x".

Repeat this for several minutes. You won't believe how this will immediately increase the accuracy, and timing of your sets and ultimately get your team delivering great killer spikes!

Defending Myself

One of the areas, while I wasn't bad, I wasn't up to the level as my teammates was my defensive dig.

So I knew that I needed to both fix my reaction times and my ability to dive for the ball. I then created this drill to work on it and now I prowl the middle court like a lion looking for fresh meat!

Very simply I defend myself. It took me awhile to get use to doing this, but once I got a handle on it, I didn't have any more problems.

Throw the ball up in the air and bump it on the way down. Now, all you need to do for a set period of time is continue to dive, dig, or bump the ball again wherever it comes down.

Like I mentioned, this drill will dramatically increase your reaction times and ability to relentlessly pursue the ball.

Once you become accustomed to the drill you can make it even more demanding my controlling where you actually bump it to.

Work On Your Weaknesses And Your Team Will Be Unstoppable

When my teammates and I began working on self practice techniques on a regular basis we became an even stronger force, both as a team and personally.

Do you have any weak areas? Try these practice drills to further enhance your volleyball game and create the "unstoppable" team.

Eulogy to My Father, My Hero

My father was born in 1926 in Montreal, Canada and lived there for 11 years. His parents were Leon and Edna Zareski. He was the oldest of three children, the other two being- a sister, Audrey, and brother, Norman.

Drill Power Tools

What I would like to do now is tell you about my father. I want you to walk away from here with a better understanding and appreciation of his life and who he was. And I am going to acquaint you with some aspects of his life with which you may not be familiar - the soldier, the geologist, and the sports fan... but first...

Drill Power Tools

My father as a young boy - the ketchup story.

The setting for the ketchup story is my father's boyhood home in 1931 in Montreal, Canada. He is 5 years old. Most of you knew my father as a man who was unassuming, judicious with words, and diplomatic. [Smile..] But he wasn't always like that...

My father's father (my grandfather) came home from work one evening to find a bottle of homemade ketchup that the lady next door had made and brought over. (Apparently this was not the first such bottle of ketchup.) My grandfather uttered a few choice words, grabbed the ketchup bottle, opened the back door, and threw the bottle into the cow pasture.

Several days later, the lady, who made the ketchup, came over and asked how they liked it. My father (the young boy) gleefully exclaimed,
"Oh! Dad threw the ketchup out back to the cows!"

Needless to say, that was the last bottle of ketchup that women ever made for the family! [Pause...]

My father was a Soldier

Tom Brokaw wrote a book about the generation of unassuming men and woman who went off to fight in WWII - the name of the book is "The Greatest Generation." I am proud to state my father was a participating member of this "greatest generation." [Pause...]

For years - in fact decades - after the War he did not talk about his involvement. Only after the movie, 'Saving Private Ryan," which came out 50 years after the War, did he begin to open up about some of his experiences.

Whatever plans he had for college as an 18-year old were placed on hold as he went off to boot camp. He said he almost lost the ring finger on his right hand during hand-to-hand combat drills in boot camp when a bootlace of the soldier he was fighting got caught in his ring. After that experience, he was never too fond of wearing rings. His parents had given him that ring in 1944 as a high school graduation present.

This is the ring, and I am proud to wear it now.

He was in the Army's 78th Infantry Division (known as the 'Lightning" Division), 311th Regiment.

After completing boot camp, he was literally shipped to the front lines of the European Theater, where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge in the Winter of 1944/45. Rain and mud of December gave way to the snow and bitter cold of January, 1945. Thick snow draped the hills and valleys, and hung from fir trees in a picture-card beauty that belied the horror of war.

That winter was the coldest winter in Europe in 50 years. The infantry dug holes in the snow each night and did their best to keep warm and get some sleep. He told of how he would go without bathing for two to three weeks at a time. He explained that his most precious article of clothing was his socks - the only article of clothing of which he carried two pair. He would wash one pair as often as possible, so that his feet would not rot. You see, when you are in the infantry and constantly on the move, your feet become your most important asset.

Throughout that winter, the 78th Infantry held the area it had taken from the Siegfried Line against the violent German attacks. In the march toward the Rhine River, the 78th engaged in bitter, painful fighting. From town to town, foxhole to foxhole, hedgerow to hedgerow, from cellar to cellar, rubble heap to rubble heap, the Germans resisted the advance but were methodically killed or captured.

Another famous battle, in which he saw action, was the Bridge at Remagen. On March 8, 1945, just 4 days after his 19th birthday, he was among the first troops to embark on the nightmare crossing of the Ludendorff Bridge at Remagen. The Germans were firing down upon the bridge from the opposite hillside. Try to imagine what it was like crossing this bridge on foot and under heavy fire. Bullets were flying everywhere...flying metal ricocheted against steel girders. He exclaimed that he never ran so fast in his life, so as to get to the other side. [Pause...]

He told me of how afterwards, when the bridge was secured, his battalion sat on the hillside for several hours and watched in amazement as the Allied Forces literally shoved everything they had across the bridge -- soldiers, vehicles, supplies, and artillery. He noted recently that it was one of the most remarkable sights of his entire life.

This battle has been the subject of many books and movies due to its historical significance. The spectacular crossing at Remagen and the securing of the first Rhine River bridgehead marked an important turning point in the war, and marked the beginning of the final phase in the Allied annihilation of Nazi Germany.

At 19 years of age, he was promoted to Sergeant. He was the only member of his original squad who was left standing - the others were either killed or wounded in battle. [Pause...] He once told Sharon he believed it was meant for him to live, because everyone else around him was killed. [Pause...]

On April 17th, after 128 days of continuous front-line duty and intense fighting, -- 128 days of continuous fighting -- the Lightning Division was taken off the front line and put into reserve for a well-earned rest. [Pause...]

In 2000, he and Sharon went back to Remagen for a 55-year reunion of this battle. When he and Sharon came upon a corner of a particular building in town, he pointed to a window across the street and told Sharon of how 55 years earlier, a German soldier had fired at him from that window and had him pinned down. [Pause...]

My father was a Geologist

After the War, in 1952, he received a Bachelor's Degree in Geology from Brooklyn College in N.Y. That same year he married my mother, Eleanor Zareski, and they moved to Tuscon, Arizona. He was in the process of taking courses towards a Master's Degree at the University of Arizona, when I came along. My parents also had two daughters - my sisters, Carol and Lisa. [Smile...]

My father was intelligent, hard working, and enjoyed a successful professional career.

He began as a field geologist and surveyor in Utah and out West in the early 1950s, where he and a small band of surveyors set out to discover uranium deposits for the Atomic Energy Commission, a branch of the US Government.

Can anyone guess what the Government was doing with this uranium?
It was used in the development of Atomic bombs. [Pause...]

For several decades - 1960s, 70s and 80s - a sample of uranium from one of his discoveries was on display in Washington, D.C. in the Museum of Natural History. [Pause...]

Over the years, he rose through the Government ranks to the level of GS15 and when he retired, he was the Deputy Director of the Bureau of Natural Gas and Director of the Oil and Gas information System within the Department of Energy.

After he retired from the Government in the early 1980s, he joined a consulting firm, Zinder Associates, as Senior Vice President.

In 1981, my father married Sharon. Words cannot express how grateful I am to Sharon for the unconditional love, dedication and absolute devotion that Sharon bestowed on my father, especially in his last months and weeks.

My father was a Sports Fan

He loved to play golf. He was skillful (and lucky) enough to score two holes in one in his lifetime.

He was an avid Redskins fan - he watched the Redskins games just about every week since the mid 1960s - that is more than 40 years!

He was a huge Baseball fan - In his youth, he played sandlot baseball in New York - he was a pitcher. He threw a great slider, and tried to teach me that pitch, when I was younger, but I never could master it like him.

Closing...
It's funny the stories that you remember...

My sisters and I used to enjoy playing a unique game with my Dad. It was called 'Dad takes off his belt and chases the three of us around the main floor of the house.' We would even initiate this game. We would run around laughing and screaming in fear of being whacked across the legs by his belt. Getting hit did not occur too frequently, but the thought of it made the game both exciting and terrorizing. Sometimes he would even make it scarier by turning off the lights.

The year is 1971, my first year at W&M. If it were not for my father, I would not have passed Freshman English, a writing course that was mandatory for graduation. For those of you who are too young to remember, in 1971 there were no desktop computers, no Internet, email, or word processing capability. The typewriter was it. After I failed my first several writing assignments, I sent a draft copy of each new assignment by mail to my father, who corrected and rewrote my papers, as necessary, and mailed them back to me. I, or should I say we, raised my final grade up to a C.

My father was a man of few words and not easily angered or perturbed. We used to play golf every Sunday in Front Royal. He would do the driving to the course in the early morning, and I would drive us home in the early afternoon. On one particular Sunday afternoon in the early 1970s, while I was driving us home, my father took his usual nap. Well, I must have dozed off at the wheel, because the next thing I know the car was traversing side ways [Hands] down the grassy median strip on Route 50 in Chantilly. We hit a road sign and flipped it across the hood of the car. Grass and hay were flying through the open windows and pass our heads. Onlookers were watching in amazement from the nearby fruit stand. Finally, I gained control of the car and stopped, then got back onto the highway. My father, who was now awake and holding onto the seat for dear life [Hands] exclaimed in bewilderment, "What the hell are you doing!?" I replied, "I am trying to get us back on the road!" He never said another word.

[Pause...]
My father and I had a great relationship. I respected and admired him. He is the man who had the most influence on the man I became. He is the man who had the most influence on the man I became. He is my hero.

And our relationship extended beyond just father and son. We were close friends. We had similar interests and genuinely enjoyed each other's company. Whether spending long weekends together at Nags Head or Williamsburg, or dining in our favorite restaurants with Sharon and Sandi, or just quiet times at home, we enjoyed many quality times together.

I love him and shall miss him dearly.

I thank all of you for coming here to lend support to Sharon, my sisters and their families, and my family -- and to pay respect to my beloved father.

Thank you.

Fun Volleyball Drills That Will Keep Kids Interested

Keeping it fun, keeps kids interested. I will list a few fun drills that you can try with your team to help them with their basic skills, and others skills that are often not practices much. These will improve your team's performance.

Drill Power Tools

Have your team jog on a specific spot on the floor. Have them do this until you say "Hit the Floor". When you yell out those words all of the team has to drop to the floor immediately. If you want to make it competitive, you can set a rule such as the last player to drop is out.

Drill Power Tools

Split up your team into pairs and have them stand about 10-20 feet apart on each side of the net. Give each pair of players a ball. Start the drill with player one giving a hard down ball to player two.

Player two has to dig the volleyball up high, and then tomahawk it using above the head contact, then they should hit the ball with their left fist only, then just use their right fist, then set the ball up to themselves, then lastly hit a down ball over the net for the other team mate to replicate the sequence of hits.

Begin doing this drill at a slow pace then little by little increase the speed as the team becomes familiar with the array of the skills and the amount of power required to keep on hitting the ball to each other.

Another drill is to take two players and have one lay on top of the other. You hit the ball high into the court. At the sound of the hit on the ball, the players get up, and the player that was on the bottom runs to the ball to make a pass; the other player that was on top will move to get into position to set their team mate. After the pass, set, and hit the volleyball drill starts over with a new pair of players. This is great drill for learning fast response and player communication skills.

The 36618-02 works at speeds up to 1,600 RPM and provides 500 in./lbs. of torque. Durashield housing, unibody construction, and a steel-reinforced collar help you withstand real-world conditions, like temperature extremes, rain, dirt, debris, and drops.

The 36618-02's Durashield Housing is constructed with ABS/Nylon composite, which makes the housing flexible and impenetrable. Unlike competitive tools, which use a conventional plastic housing, Durashield will not crack and can easily withstand 10-foot drops.

This tool also features unique unibody construction with three steel straps that keep the motor, gears, and clutch together. This ensures that the gears never separate from the motor, and it keeps the drill functioning even after drops.

Additionally, the 36618-02 boasts an exclusive steel-reinforced collar that protects the nose of the drill. It provides extra reinforcement in the event of drops on the chuck and prevents the chuck from bending or breaking off.

Easy Bit Changes and Balanced Design for Utmost Control
The 36618-02 comes complete with a single-sleeve 1/2-inch chuck for one-handed bit changes, as well as increased drill-bit capacity for versatility. And for maximum control, comfort, and balance, the tool boasts a newly designed handle-grip with finger support.

Smart Features for Easy Use
20 clutch settings and a variable-speed trigger help you match the best speed to the job, so you can achieve precise results. At the same time, the 36618-02's ergonomic design provides optimum comfort and control. And for even greater convenience, LEDs provide illumination when you are working in dark or enclosed areas.

ProVantage Guarantee
The 36618-02 comes with the ProVantage three-year protection plan, which guarantees two years of battery protection and one year of tool protection. Under this plan, you can receive two years of free battery replacements, tool replacement for one year, and a free tool repair package for the second and third years.

Submersible Well Pump How to Replace

Replacing a submersible well pump is not a complicated task and relatively simple if you understand the basics about a well system - like the placement of the pump, how the submersible pump operates and how it is installed in a well casing. An advanced do it yourselfer with knowledge of electrical wiring and some basic plumbing skills is probably capable of replacing a submersible irrigation pump. This is not a step by step installation guide but rather an overview for a general understanding to evaluate whether to do it yourself or hire a contractor. The savings on the cost of labor, if you do it yourself, will be about 50 - 60% of the total price of a contractor doing the job. The first factor in deciding whether to attempt doing it yourself is how deep the well is and do you have a large enough lay down area to layout the pipe in your yard once you start pulling it out of the casing. If your well is 50' to 150' deep, I would recommend doing it yourself if you are physically capable to continuously lift and pull about 40 to 70 pounds of weight and hold it in place for during the complete removal of pump to keep from dropping it back into the well. To do this you will need at least one other person to help you pull out the pump and guide the discharge pipe away from the well as you are lifting it out.

Drill Power Tools

The well casing in made of steel, iron or PVC pipe usually 3"or 4" inside diameter and this acts as a sleeve in which the pump housing, discharge pipe and wiring go down to reach the water level within this pipe casing. Attached to the submersible pump is the discharge pipe, usually 1" to 1- ¼" flexible poly pipe and the electrical wiring which also runs into this casing to the depth of submersible pump in the well. The deeper the well, the heavier and more difficult it is to lift out. The weight of the pump assembly may require some rigging above the well casing to help lift and hold the pump assembly in place so it doesn't slip and drop back down into the well casing as you are pulling it out. Once you start pulling up of the pump you must continue the motion until it is fully out of the casing. If you are doing this manually attach a rope beforehand to the top end of well cap so the other person can easier hold on to it and tie it off to something - a tree or fence, in between lifts if you need to take a break and stop lifting.

Drill Power Tools

If you decide to replace the well pump yourself, here are some tips to remember. Determine that the pump motor is bad by checking circuit breakers, switches and check that power is at the well head. If power is on at well head it is a good sign that the pump is broke. Turn off the power at the breaker panel, tag and lock it out for safety before you start exposing the well head. Clear the area around the well head, approx 6' to 8' diameter, of shrubs and plants so you have enough room to expose the pump outlet and electrical connections. Disconnect the discharge pipe and undo the wiring at the junction box near the top of the well. Loosen the bolts on top of the casing cover, this is a squeeze type of cover with a thick rubber ring that expands as tightened and contracts as loosened against the casing interior. Once loose, try to lift the cover, as you lift you will be getting an idea of how heavy the whole assembly is of which you have to lift out of the well.

Now you are ready to lift the pump. Rubber gloves, protective clothing or coveralls should be worn as the pump piping may have an iron and silt residue on the exterior and can be quite a messy job. Fasten a pull rope around the top of the well head for the other person to hold on and tie off if needed. Some wells may have a leader rope or cable already attached from original installation instead of relying on the discharge hose clamps and connection. The person who will do the actual pulling should stand directly above the well to lift the discharge piping straight out of the casing and the other person should stay with the top end of well cap and guide it to where you lay it down as you pull. Make sure that the person guiding the end has a good grip on the end before you release to get another grip. Continue until pump assembly is fully out of the casing and wash off the entire pump end so you read the specification tag of the pump.

Collect the information from the old pump - brand, model, HP, voltage, phase, 110/220, rpm, 2 or 3 wire configuration, continuous duty and the pumps outlet size and discharge pipe size. Most residential submersible pumps are either 2 wire or 3 wire configuration. The 2 wire type has 2 - 110v wires along with a case ground to pump housing. The 2 wire pump needs no controls. If it is a 3 wire pump you should replace the controls also.

Most submersible pump are two piece units bolted together to be one assembly and consists of the motor and the pump. You can just replace the motor or pump if you choose, but I would highly suggest that you replace the whole assembly. After you have identified what type and size pump you have you may want to decide to upgrade your system with a higher volume pump of keep the same configuration. For upgrading, you should contact a supplier or well contractor for recommendations to be compatible with your needs and piping sizes to which your pump feeds.

Installing the new pump assembly. Make an itemized list of new parts, controls, fittings or wiring as needed. If the existing wiring and flex pipe are in good condition there is no need to replace them. To install the new pump you will have to splice the electric wires together in a waterproof connection. Consult an electrician or well contractor to specify the power wire splice connector type and technique acceptable for well applications. Connect the pipe fittings and pipe clamps as directed in the manufacturer's instructions. Tape the power wires about every 2' for the entire length to the flex pipe for ease in reinstallation of pump into casing. Turn the power to the pump on momentarily to check if it is working before inserting assembly into well. Turn the power breaker off and prepare to insert the pump back into the well again using 2 people - one at the well opening lowering and feeding the pump down and the other person at the well head cover feeding the slack to you and to help hold back to prevent the pump from dropping quickly down the casing.
